leading region in pet identification in 2020

June 6-12, 2022 will be the fourth National Dog and Cat Identification Week. The process is mandatory and helpful in the event of the loss of an animal.

National Dog and Cat Identification Week began on June 6, 2022. In 2021, 1,953,708 animals were identified in the National I-cad (Domestic Carnivore Identification) file. This database includes dogs, cats and ferrets. This document is especially highlighted by the fourth important edition to raise awareness before summer, the most favorable period for animal abandonment.

This identification process is mandatory for all pets. Puppies under the age of four months and kittens under the age of seven months get sick. During this prevention campaign, special attention is paid to cats. Nearly half of the cats will not be identified in France.

Two methods can be used: either by tattooing letters and numbers, or by electronic chipping. These processes make it possible to identify the owner in case of loss or theft of an animal thanks to a unique number. There is a 90% chance that an identified animal will be returned to its owner, but only a 15% chance otherwise. According to I-CAD, three-quarters of lost animals are cats.

The I-CAD also indicates that identification is mandatory when adopting an animal, but the process must be considered throughout life. If you move, be sure to report the change of address to make it easier to find the animal. If the animal is adopted through a private owner, you should not forget about identification.

New Aquitaine is the region with the most identifications in 2020, with 201,874 animals registered in the I-CAD file. Auvergne-Rhone-Alpes and Occitania are in second and third place with 198,710 and 193,691 animals identified respectively. Nationally, the number of identified animals increased by 17.12% between 2019 and 2020.

Cats are becoming more and more popular. In three years, their number increased by almost 15%, while dogs were less successful – only 3.9%.

Dogs are the most popular animals in 2020 in the North (371,798 animals) and the Pas de Calais (309,353 animals). In the south of France, the people of Bouches-du-Rhone also prefer dogs, with 236,565 animals identified.

The I-CAD file also allows you to dwell on the names given to our satellites in 2021. Perhaps you will find the name of your animal there, among Ruby or Sushi for cats, or Stella and Snow for dogs. Simba settles on the first step of the pedestal, both in cats and dogs.
