Eilenburg: small dogs with nimble legs
Eulenburg.Visitors saw a very special spectacle at the hippodrome in the Bürgergarten in Eilenburg. Pugs, Dalmatians and company competed against each other in the traditional Eilenburg Greyhound Club race without Greyhounds. “This competition has been around for a very long time. I think it was in the late 1990s when we started. Now everyone is looking forward to this event after the break due to the coronavirus,” said the chairman of the association, Anke Bott.

Labrador bitch Amy is very experienced
But the top priority for both owners and their four-legged friends was fun. Labrador Amy watched her competitions from afar. Because a three-year-old bitch is an experienced athlete. Together with her owner Ralf Mader from Eilenburg, she has already taken part in many races. “We’ve been through a lot, mostly in Canicross. In this sport, the dog runs with the person. They are tied with a leash. Basically I trained Amy with meat sausage. She likes it the most,” Mader says.

Yorkshire terrier Mr. Gibbs wants to show his athletic side too. The requirements are quite limited. “We were there eight years ago. Mr. Gibbs was a heart-breaker,” said Franziska Flander from Leipzig.
Jackson is seduced by salmon cream
Jackson, even before the start, tried to intimidate his competitors with wild barking. It belongs to the Prague rat breed. This breed of dog was bred primarily to track down rats. “Jackson thinks he’s taller. He’s really really small. When I run, I lure him with salmon cream. He loves to lick them,” says Lisa Radl from Leipzig.

Two-legged friends bring four-legged friends to life
Then the spectacle began. And what the masters and women did to push their four-legged friends to sprint was most liked by the audience. Some were screaming, others were luring with their favorite sausage or waving at the dog’s favorite stuffed animal. In the end, Jackson’s salmon cream didn’t do much good either. The dog relaxed, completing the course in 7.92 seconds and finishing in fifth place. Even buddy Mr. Gibbs had little to do with the trophy. After a leisurely 15.55 seconds, the doggy crossed the finish line and again became the owner of hearts, finishing ninth.
After the furious finale of the race it became easier. Then the most beautiful four-legged friends were awarded prizes at the exhibition. The jury decided on behavior, style and charisma. All results are available at www.wind-burg.de
