On the windowsill of a Schlumberger, in the corner, an areca lingers, and a calathea adorns the hallway. Do you immediately have images in front of your inner eye? Then you can be #plantmom or #plantdad – or at least qualified to be part of this Instagram community. Plant moms and plant dads pose as their favorite plants on social media like others do with their pets or kids. Over 3.4 million posts have the hashtag #plantmom, and users have tagged 541,000 photos and videos with the hashtag #plantdad. And one more thing: if you browse Instagram under the hashtag #plantparents (“plant parents”), you will see photos of couples posing with succulents as if they were their sons or daughters. Dogs and cats are also more likely to scurry around the picture. Obviously there is an intersection between #plantmom and #plantdad, and also between #catmom and #dogdad (“cat mom” and “dog dad”).
Shared room as #urbanjungle
However, overzealous parents tend to care less about mom and dad. In a community, it doesn’t matter to many to impress each other with specialist knowledge or an exotic collection. Many Plantmoms and Plantdads are Millennials or Generation Z. They decorate their common rooms, balconies, and apartments with green plants like monstera, palms, or single-leaf plants. Once a few green plants and succulents have established themselves, they will soon take up more space and time. On the one hand, parent plants enjoy growing new plants from offshoots, and on the other hand, they care for existing plants with such love that they grow into large, impressive plants.
Therefore, the #urbanjungle hashtag can also be found under some Instagram photos. Because in many of the common rooms of a plant mom or a plant dad, you almost feel like you’re standing in the middle of a jungle.
